Welcome to Sao Miguel ~ Upon arrival at Ponta Delgada International Airport, you’ll be met by your driver and brought to your hotel in the city’s center. Your room will be ready for immediate check-in, so freshen up or take a nap and then start your exploration of this cultural city. Explore the cobblestone streets of the Azores’ largest city. Visit the Portas da Cidade (city gate), the historic St. Sebastian Church, and Forte de São Brás, or simply relax in a café near the marina. In the evening, enjoy a local wine and cheese tasting for your first introduction to the destination.
Sunday, Sept. 25 ~ Furnas & Tea
Eastern Sao Miguel/Furnas & tea factory tour
Start your day with a visit to the islands’ two tea plantations. Tour the factory and see how they still use the traditional machinery and get your first taste of the green and black tea grown on the island. The tour continues to Furnas Lake, located in the archipelago’s oldest crater, where you can take in the beautiful nature, the various migrating birds, and you will be able to watch your traditional cozido lunch being prepared using the island’s geothermal energy. After lunch, visit the award-winning botanical gardens in Terra Nostra Park where you will have a chance to soak in the geothermal hot springs. On your return journey to Ponta Delgada, drive the southern road along the coast and make a quick photo stop at the beautiful seaside town of Vila Franca do Campo.
Monday, Sept 26 ~ Sete Cidades
Western São Miguel~Sete Cidades caldera + pineapple plantation tour
Today’s tour visits a local pineapple plantation for an opportunity to see how the island’s delicious fruit is grown. Did you know that the Azores export over 2 million pineapples a year! Then visit one of the most scenic lookout points on the western end of the island, Vista do Rei, where you’ll see the iconic blue and green crater lakes of Sete Cidades. After that descent into the parish to stroll through the small town and admire the local white and black architecture.
*The afternoon is at your leisure, whether you want to go hiking, on a whale/dolphin watching boat tour or explore the museums and gardens of magical Ponta Delgada.
Tuesday, Sept 27 ~ Free Day or Hike!
Free day or optional hike the Salto do Prego waterfall
Today is a Free Day. One optional add-on is a hike in the eastern parish of Faial da Terra on the trail to the former village of Sanguinho. Here you will find abandoned buildings and traces of traditional farming, along with a panoramic view of the village below. The highlight of the hike is the magnificent Salto do Prego waterfall, famous for its fresh, glittering, crystalline water.
Wednesday, Sept 28 ~ Fly to Terceira Island
Welcome to Terceira ~ the Lilac Island
We start the day with a morning flight to Terceira Island. On arrival, enjoy a day tour of this agricultural island complete with a visit to the famous Algar do Carvão lava caves and a local lunch. The evening is on your own to explore the UNESCO World Heritage village of Angra do Heroísmo.
Thursday, Sept 29 ~ Until Next Time
Free time and then your NON-STOP departure to Boston
After breakfast at the hotel you will have some free time in the morning and early afternoon to shop for souvenirs, continue to explore the quaint parts of town, or simply relax before your transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
